My Boat Shoes

Sebago Shoes which started life in 1946, are on the crest of a huge wave right now. Boat and Deck Shoes are once again set to dominate the Spring 2011 season for the retro inspired preppy look that started two season’s ago. The Company launched the first of their iconic boat shoes in 1970 with the introduction of the now famous and much in demand Dockside. Initially this came in just a couple of colours, dark brown and tan but they quickly realised that people wanted a much wider colour pallet and introduced navy. This lead on to the explosion of colours you see today with an array of special combination’s including nubuck and leather in different colours and for the real fashionistas, patent leather as well!

Docksides continue this trend with a new selection of colours for the coming season, the first to arrive is a Waxy Smoke Nubuck material on the newer white out sole. There is also continuity for all classic colours such as Navy with a white sole and Brown on white as well as a resurgence in the more traditional gum coloured sole. All the soles are ‘siped’ which is a method of making fine horizontal cuts in the sole itself, originally to emulate the paws of the founders dog as he scampered across the wet decks of his yacht!

The range is further exploded by the reintroduction of the best selling Sloop, Spinnaker and Endeavour Deck Shoes in traditional waxy brown leather with gum coloured sole units. I have a pair of Sperry Top Sider boat shoes that I have been (regrettably) wearing without socks. These ones are leather on the inside and (black) wool on the outside with sort of a patent leather accent on a couple of spots. Is it safe to throw them in the washing machine maybe with like dark towels or something and let them air dry?
I should have worn socks with them because now they smell..horrible and I’m not sure how to clean them without ruining them. Thanks for any advice!

This one is a tough one to answer. Because they are wool and leather. But I will give you an idea that I would try if they were mine. If you can’t clean them I guess they are fairly useless, so try this.

Take out the laces and open them up as wide as you can pulling the tongue up. This is the hard part so wear something that can get wet.

Pin up your shoes at the car wash where the mats go. Spray them inside. Let them drip dry for about an hour at home. Either use the sun to let them dry facing the heel towards the sun, or pull the dryer vent hose inside and aim it at the insides of them. They might shrink because of the leather and woolb that is the hard part. If they do shrink, you might have a shoe repair in your area that can stretch them for a few bucks with those wooden or metal inserts that crank open once inside the shoe.

Maybe someone has an idea like lemon or orange sprays, but I personally haven’t known much of anything that will overpower stinky shoes.

Try wearing some powder next time or the real thin booties that don’t show above the shoe.
