How can I take the smell out of a pair of shoes?

February 25th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

I have a pair of Sperry boat shoes that absolutely reek. Their my favorite pair of shoes and I have a very important date to go on in 2 days. Is there anything I can do to take the smell out? Its so bad I can smell them while wearing them.

put dry soap in it

Absolutely cover them in bicarb soda and leave for a day or so after washing them. Put a couple of packets of bicarb soda in a zip lock bag, add shoes, seal and shake every couple of hours.

If they can be washed, do so…with vinegar.
If not, try putting baking soda in them, stuff them with newspaper and leave them as long as possible. Then shake or vacuum them out.

Wear antiperspirant on your feet so they won’t sweat and the dampness bring the smell back.

You can try taking them to the dry cleaners and asking them to try to get the smell out.

A lot of the time, wearing shoes with nylons or socks with nylon in them, cause the smell.

Apply some extra polish and put inside Half cut lemon in each shoe and put the shoes in a plastic cover for over-night the lemon will absorbers the oder smell.
Next day check you will not smell bad.
Shoes when not in use for long time has to be polished both inside / out side and kept in a shoe box to avoid bad Oder’s.

Strike a match inside them, I don’t mean to burn them but this will take the smell away.

Surefire ways of killing the bacteria that make things smell bad are microwave oven or freeze them. I don’t know if your Sperry shoes will stand up to microwave (go in two seconds at a time) or if a 36 hours is enough time for freezing to work.

Since boat shoes are meant to be worn on boats, where submersion happens, I think you can risk either machine washing them in cold water with double detergent and bleach, then double rinsing, and wearing them damp on your date. Scrub the insides with bleach and detergent first. Just make sure you rinse well, and wash with a couple of old pairs of jeans or towels to keep from unbalancing your machine. Dry in the sun.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to respond anyway. The thing about washing your leather shoes in the washing machine won’t do. Maybe if you were talking about a pair of Deckmocs, or old-style, heavily oiled Timberland’s, but these new, imported Speery’s (et al) will fall apart at the drop of a hat. They evidently didn’t consider people would actually use them on deck…

What I find to work, short of trolling them astern for the day, is to sprinkle Borax powder inside them and vacuum it out the next day. For whatever reason the vacuuming part, rather than shaking, seems essential. Also, I’ve abandoned the practice of not wearing socks with them. As you’ve probably noticed, the quality is pretty poor these days, and sweat, besides making them reek in the most heart-breaking sort of way, will also rapidly deteriorate them.

I’ve got a pair of Deckmocs that are 10 years old now: my last pair of Speery’s lasted through one summer of sailing and were toast before the leaves started to fall. I’ve found that the cheaper grades of leather now being used tend to stink tip much quicker, too. If the Borax doesn’t work, I suggest removing the soles and burying them in the compost heap. At least the plants won’t mind the smell.
