Looking for some advice, really want to look professional and older now that I am on my own.
Shirts, Cut-away collar or button-down? When is the right time for each? Right now I primarily wear a cut-away collar.
Shorts, I am thinking of getting rid of my cargo shorts to get something more like these.

Not sure which is better or what the inseam should be? How short is too short? 9in was just above the knee, but might be a tad too long?
Shoes, looking to get some original sperry’s Boat Shoes to work with jeans, shorts, etc. Do you think these are the most versatile? What color? Would loafers be better? if so which?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Making an investment want to do it right.
As a side note, how feasible is it to do all of your shopping online? Is it still wise to try things on in the store first? or is it easy to buy online and return? I have limited free time, I like to utilize it for things other than shopping!
From looking at this you should go for a nautical look. Creams, navys, and reds mostly.
I like shirts with collars but with two or three buttons undone with a plain t shirt under. But if you want a more professional look go for maybe just one button undone.
Go for shorts that stop just on the knee. Too short and you’ll look like a schoolboy.
I love Boat Shoes. Go for a dark grey or navy. You can wear navy with anything except black and can wear grey with absolutely everything. You don’t want a bright colour because they’ll detract from the rest of your outfit and you’ll be stuck always wearing dark coloured plain clothes every time you wear the bright shoes.
I like the first tie best. It suits the nautical look more. Wear with a navy v neck jumper and paler blue shirt.
Internet shopping is convenient but it is sometimes difficult to imagine the look on you or what the material will be like. It’s easy to return though.
